Once inhabited by the Salassi, the valley offered fertile lands, abundant game, fish-filled streams, and rich mining resources. They lived in harmony with nature, worshiping the god Penn. With the arrival of the Romans, attracted by the strategic position granting access to Gaul, the valley witnessed the expansion of Aosta and the construction of roads and aqueducts, some of which are still visible today.

During the Middle Ages, Courmayeur became a coveted destination for noble families who left behind castles and fortified houses as their legacy. These noble estates became the first inns under the reign of the House of Savoy. It was under this dynasty that the thermal springs were discovered, drawing the first “beveurs” in search of the therapeutic properties of the “miraculous waters.”
Soon, the charm of the valley also captivated explorers, sparking a passion for mountaineering. The summit of Mont Blanc, or Mont Malet as it was called in the Middle Ages, was conquered in 1786 from the French side, and only in 1850 from the Italian side, thanks to the guides of Courmayeur.
With its 4,810 meters and 65 glaciers, Mont Blanc is a fascinating giant. The retreat of the glaciers gave rise to the stunning Val Veny and Val Ferret. Skiing, once possible in both summer and winter, saw a boom with the development of ski lifts, becoming one of the most beloved sports.
Since the 1970s, Courmayeur has blossomed as one of the most popular ski resorts and a trendy destination. A stroll through the charming historic center will offer you shops, cafés, and a journey through historic landmarks and traditions that make our valley truly unique.

Get ready to wake up to the view of Mont Blanc and be surprised by the enchantment of the Alps-it’s time to create unforgettable memories.

In our area, festivals are very popular and the whole population participates!
If you stay during the carnival period, you can admire the colorful floats and the Beuffon, the “carnival carabiniers.” Their costumes are reminiscent of Napoleonic uniforms, with medals and mock ranks, while their decorated hats symbolize the arrival of spring. On evenings before Mardi Gras they parade through villages with cowbells, drawing the attention of young and old alike to announce Carnival.
Easter Monday sees the well-known Paquerette, a fair of handicrafts from Valle d’Aosta.
At Christmas time, on December 8, children and the Badoshy, Courmayeur’s traditional costume, go around the tree in the church square and light the illuminations throughout the village, while on December 24, Rhèmy de Noël, Courmayeur’s Santa Claus, comes down from his house in the Giant’s Tooth and meets all the children who have been good.
During the summer, Courmayeur turns into a lively stage for village festivals: one falls practically every weekend! In particular, the patronal festival of Saint Pantaleon, patron saint of the town, is an event not to be missed. The downtown streets come alive with booths where you can enjoy traditional delicacies, dance along with the Badoshy, music is played by the local band, and the party goes on all night with a wild street party involving the whole village!
